Mining PEW

Madden, M. (2013).  Teens and Mobile Apps Privacy.  PEW Internet. Retrieved on

With more and more teen using mobile devices and digital tools like iPads, Samsung Galaxy, or the many other tablets there is a growing concern about privacy of teens.  According to this research it found that many teens are downloading apps that are free because they reason that they can delete the app if they do not like it.  In this survey it found that 51% of teens delete apps that have been installed once they find that the app is trying to acquire personal information.  I have just recently been worried about apps like this especially when it asked to gain access to my contacts.  Somehow I think that this is wrong because if I wanted to share information with my friends it should come from me not because the app is trying to contact my friends.

Students need to have technology skills and as librarians we need to help guide them using appropriate measures in privacy.  This research did find that 70% of teens did ask for assistance from an adult when apps asked for personal information, however, if students are given tips about how and what to do when considering downloading an app this will help them to take necessary precautions.
